reading HW
By wow!

Clip to ScrapBook
My reading log includes date, book title, time (# of minutes read) and parent initials (very important.) I believe nightly reading is crucial to success with reading. I required 20 minutes every night (doing it was 1/3 of
their 9 weeks' reading grade.) I'm very surprised other teachers don't see this as important. I credit nightly reading with bringing many of my below-level readers up to grade level and higher! If you teach at a high-risk Title I school like I do, I suggest creating a Take-Home Reader Library for students to use since they probably don't have many resources at home. Also, I found teaching
them how to choose a book that was "just right" for them was as important as the activity itself. I use the five-finger rule for this, but there are other ways. I encourage you to at least try the reading log. I think you'll be pleased with the results.
