1st day...Math
By JC

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi...I don't go back until after Labor Day, but anyways for math we ALWAYS have FREE EXPLORATION of the materials (pattern blocks, cubes, etc.). We use MTW at our school and that is a big chunk in the beginning of the year.
However, I kinda do it differently than the book suggests. I have three tables in my room. We first model, model, model how to ue materials and what they are called, and discuss what to do with the three tubs I put out that day, then we talk about cleaning it up. After, the kids go to the tables and are allowed to "explore" the materials, we rotate every ten minutes and the kids
walk to the next table. Last year I let them pick and choose where they could go, but that wasn't as structured as I would've liked and some behavior issues occured. JC
