Susan I fully agree. I was forced to retire after 15 years as an OTR driver this past winter. At age 51 my options were limited, but I had been a certified teacher before I took up driving and I had`kept mt certification up to date.
You mentioned training to go into another field. I will be substituting this coming year due to that fact that any school that looks at my resume sees that I spent the last 15 years driving a truck and that ends the prospect right there. Subbing I feel will get me back into the field. Even though it is about a third of what I was`making I will consider it as on-the-job training.
Good luck to you in the medical fields.
