    Regarding the cussing issue: I pull the student aside and let them know it is not appropriate to use that word(s) in our room. They will often say it's OK to say it at home. I tell them that I respect that rule at their house, but in our room, it is not apprpriate. This also works on the parents too.
    To me, respecting the child and parent is so essential. You are a threat to them as much as they are to you, be pleasant, happy and positive. They often don't get much of that in their life.
