subscribe to this and it is well worth your while, and you can start the sharing with the other teachers. so inexpensive the kids can keep for home reading
and no real expense but great for encouraging reading at home.
there are leveled books and other activites and worksheets. I think manipulatives are the best for K, rather than buying commercial materials photocopy alphabet on 2 inch grid (sheet of a's and A's) and laminate, for sorting, matching, and building words, easy to make and can colour code the vowels with different colour
printed paper. I also suppliment my reading by a trip to the public library, I ask for an extended loan period and take a laundry basket and fill up with the books I could never get my hands on at school!
Math manipulatives? try cheap and available, kidney beans, stones, toothpicks, buttons, etc.
Sure you will spend your own cash, but I have only been teaching for 4 years and just moved my materials, I was shocked to see the money I spent, and yet I have said no to my own children for treats they want. I say tread carefully when spending personal cash. And, as experince showed me, what I thought I really needed, in the first years, I do not find so important now, and were as it turns out not the best spent funds.
Good luck
