Hi, I teach first grade and I teach by workshop.. Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop. I think that is the only way to go! I used to teach with centers, but I felt I was doing so much busy work trying to get things ready
everyday and also I felt I didn't know how the kids were really doing...
So last year I switched to workshops. Are you familiar? They are broken into 3 slots
1. focus lesson
2. gove it a go
3. share
I don't teach with Basals but books that I have in my library or borrow from our first grade book room. So for the first few months the kids will just be exploring schema

and then I will integrate their writing. I hope I'm not confusiong you.... Please let me know if you like what I'm doing and I can go into more depth.
