I am using centers for the first time this year also. Because we are to include 'all levels' with the 'on-level' materials, I have to do at least 2 days of total group instruction. On the first day, I will teach 'total group' in phonics, grammar skills, and vocabulary. On this day I am going to explain the center work and the goals for each center, modeling 'how to do the work'.

Day 2, we read the story and do reading strategies. On Day 3 & 4, the students do their center work while I meet with small groups. I decided to meet with the lowest groups first so that I will be able to explain the center work again before they are in the centers.

In order for the students to know where they are to go each day, I will have 5 posters (one for each center. I will use a clothes pin painted a different color to indicate a different group. Since I will have 2 rotations in one day, I will have two clothes pins for each group. Clip the pins on the centers where they are to go. The next day, just switch the clothes pins! Later, I will have a student do this job, but knowing 4th graders, they will automatically know where they are to go after awhile! I can never remember what "special" to go to on a specific day and they are ones telling ME!

I am also going to have an "Example" of the work on the Centers Posters. Not sure how effective this method will be, but it is the best I came up with. Late September, I should probably post my results! Good Luck
