You can't be sure about getting a positive or negative reference! I was told by my principal from the last school year that he would give me a good reference. He promised! So, Friday, when he was called (after I was told
the job was mine) he did the opposite and gave a negative reference so I was called back and told the job wouldn't be mine after all because of the negative reference. It has since gotten worse because they all broke policy in how the whole situation was handled. I am waiting for my union prez to call me back after she makes some phone calls. It is best to get the reference in writing,

otherwise they will call and you never know how it will turn! I sure was shocked! I have letters from principals previous to this last position and they are all very good! As long as this negative is given I will not be able to work so am having a yard sale this weekend to get rid of all my teaching stuff! Good luck and hopefully they won't give you a negative. You could feel the situation out by calling them and requesting a letter of recc. If they don't give you one and say they will give a phone recc. then be prepared for the worst! I do wish you luck in your search for a teaching job. I am in my early 40's and can't waste anymore of my time on a career that doesn't seem to want me, so I am looking for a job outside of education.
