    4th grade pain...

Homework in the 4th is a huge pain! In 3rd, it seemed to many that many assignments were given days ahead of time. Everytime I gave out homework that was due the next night, 5-10 kids consistently didn't turn it in. I have found that giving out a weekly homework packet works very well. In the packet I send home district review sheets, spelling words for the week, spelling contract, refrigerator reading and any other worksheets I would normally send home to review things we are doing in class. The kids should have no more than 40 minutes night and this covers that amount of time. I put a half sheet checklist on top that tells what is in the packet and when the packet is due. I hand it out Wed. and it is due the next Wed. . Generally, parents loved it. Only a few said it was a bit overwhelming. I would save yourself the headache and send home weekly homework packets. It all gets turned in at once and checked off for completion. Teaches the kids organization and time management also. I think nighly homework is too over their heads at this age.
