integrating subjects with power writing
By Sherri

Clip to ScrapBook
I often use power writing to reinforce topics in fourth grade social studies or science. It is a great way to get students writing and to keep them on topic. Here is an example:
1. Branches of government (topic)
2. legislative (support)
2. executive (support)
2. judicial (support)

Then we write a basic "powergraph."

Our state has three branches of government. First, the legislative branch makes the laws. Second, the executive branch enforces the laws. Third, the judicial branch interprets the laws.

Students also write paragraphs

about animal classification, states of matter, types of graphs, early transportation, etc. As students progress, we add power 3 detail sentences to back up the support sentences. (example: The governor is the head of the state executive branch.)
