On the first day of school, each child has a new pencil, pencil-top eraser (smiley face kind), and bookmark on their desk. Those are theirs to keep. In addition to that, I put a book from my classroom library for them to read while I'm taking role. It gives them a sample of what's in the classroom library. I teach 3rd grade, though.
