2nd grade
By Barb

Clip to ScrapBook
I taught 5th grade my first year and have taught 2nd for 4 years now. You will love it. Be prepared for teaching the basics and pull up your state standards to make sure you feel comfortable teaching them. Try to get the
TE for your phonics program and look over it. Make sure they know the basics (fluency, comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary). I time their reading each week for fluncy and our school tests them quarterly (2nd graders should read 80-120 words per minute in our district). Comprehension skills are usually covered in your basal series. Pre-teach vocabulary to enhance the
comprehension. Make sure they know their sight words (we test quarterly). A great site is amplt;a href="http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm"ampgt;http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htmamplt;/aampgt; .We review them every day to build fluency. Math will be simple for you after teaching 5th grade...so will grading papers! Enjoy!!!
