I taught 5th grade my first year and have taught 2nd for 4 years now. You will love it. Be prepared for teaching the basics and pull up your state standards to make sure you feel comfortable teaching them. Try to get the| TE for your phonics program and look over it. Make sure they know the basics (fluency, comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary). I time their reading each week for fluncy and our school tests them quarterly (2nd graders should read 80-120 words per minute in our district). Comprehension skills are usually covered in your basal series. Pre-teach vocabulary to enhance the | | comprehension. Make sure they know their sight words (we test quarterly). A great site is amplt;a href="http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm"ampgt;http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htmamplt;/aampgt; .We review them every day to build fluency. Math will be simple for you after teaching 5th grade...so will grading papers! Enjoy!!!
