Try the forward facing E and a backwards E such as mentioned above. Kind of like [ ], just add a line in the middle to make each parenthesis an actual E. While not giving you groups exactly, they lend themselves well to partner or trio work nicely. At the same time the Es give you more control than groups of four desks do (in my opinion).
