Everyday Math
By Mackenzie AK

Clip to ScrapBook
I too taught 5th grade Everyday Math for the first time this past year and unlike many of you, loved the program and saw my students really grasping concepts that I felt had before eluded them. I feel as though my students
left the 5th grade actually know what multiplication really was and is. They also had a greater understanding of place value and other concepts such as mean, median, mode etc. Other programs have 1 or 2 lessons on these concepts and then move on, with EM the concepts are revisited on a regular basis and the students really come to understand them. It sounds to me as though some of
you did not give the program a fair chance. Everyday Math is a stand alone program and is not intended to be used as a supplement. After time the students will catch on and catch up. My students had never seen the program before this year!! Our math scores were excellent!! Play the games as intended!! I went to a 10 hour training on Everyday Math and the guy told us that you may not make it through every chapter but that is okay. Our district math person told us we may only accomplish 4 chapters in the year but not to worry!!! Have faith!!!
