School Supply Frenzy!!! By Sarah

I completely agree with you...I did this last year and it worked beautifully. I have a brown grocery bag with each child's name on it and on the first day of school or open house(some bring supplies then)the children put all of their supplies in the bag. I have on their desks a pencil and a crayon box (from which I bought on sale at the dollar store or walmart)so they can use until I sort through their bags. In my classroom, we have community supplies. So everything goes together except of course special pencils, notebooks or crayon boxes. When the children are at lunch/special area or at the end | | of the day, I go through the supplies and note who brought what on a supply list I created and put their names on the speical items and put in their desks.. The other items are put into the classroom community. The reason I note who brings what so that if supplies become low--i send home requests to the parents that did not bring those items in at the beginning of the year. I have a class set of scissors, construction paper(school buys) and glue and only need to replenish every few years. If we have not used an item--at the end of the year, I return the items to the children so their parents can use the following year. This seems to work for me... I have not had any parent complaints about community supplies. I make all of this clear in my welcome letter I send home before school starts. Also, I do not ask for supplies that I am not in need of that year such as scissors, glue, or markers.
