Sigh... By Amanda K.

Are you sure you're describing your room on the first day, and not mine? I feel like I'm swimming in grocery bags and I have no idea which supplies belong to which child! Although, may I say that this is a good thing to| complain about. Here in California, parents aren't expected to bring in supplies because they are supposed to get a totally free education. They just kindly do it because they know how tight our budget is. Anyway, this year I am going to try a new thing. I'm going to have a list of things that I want the parents to actually put in their child's desk. I'm going to give this to the | | parents when they come in the room. At the bottom of the list, I will have a sentence that says "EVERYTHING ELSE goes on the counter." Since most of our supplies are kept by the students, just like in your room, I figure that this will leave very little for me to organize. I will also have a note at the top of the page that says something to the effect of, "Thank you so much for helping me to organize your child's supplies. This way, your child will be sure to have his/her special supplies in his/her desk from the start, and they won't accidentally be distributed to someone else during the course of our busy day." Again, I haven't used this idea yet - I only thought of it at the end of last year. It seems like it will work, but I'd love to hear any ideas other teachers have.
