VIP
By Susan

Clip to ScrapBook
I call my student of the week (I do it weekly) the VIP (very important pupil). Other teachers call them their "teacher's pet". I asked my 5th graders several years ago what things they wanted as a treat for that week.
This is what they came up with (and I still use them):
1. A soft drink from the machine for lunch (they offered to pay for it, but I do it).
2. "Cut" anywhere in line.
3. Teach a lesson (basically one from the book that is easy to teach).
4. Pick from my treasure chest.

That's it! I thought that was very reasonable, and my students since then have loved it. I pick them based

on them getting along with others, turning in homework, and not getting in trouble in other classes (PE, etc...). Some kids never got it, because they didn't earn it. I never gave it to kids more than once, but I never told them that.
