I am not sure what criteria you need in your state, but in Iowa there are several things that are needed to substitute: A copy of your current license, physical that states you have been tested for TB, and a certificate
that shows you have passed the manditory reporter class. I take these items along with a state standard teaching application which our Department of Ed. has on line, a cover letter and a business card in a packet to each school (district) I would like to sub in. I ask to meet the principal and the person who does the the calling for the district. I leave each my information. The principal

may or may not do the sub calling but he or she does have input on new hires.

I worked every day, several long terms varing in length from 3-8 weeks, and was hired the first year after subbing. It is definately worth the time to visit the principals in person.
