sub caller
By dolly

Clip to ScrapBook
In the districts I've ever worked in, the principals usually have little (or nothing) to do with who gets called for sub jobs. There is someone hired by the district that handles the sub calling & assignments on a daily
basis. If a teacher is going on a planned day off, a principal (or teacher) may put in a request (or suggestion) for a specific sub whom they know can handle the class well, or who is familiar with the class from previous subbing assignments. Therefore, I don't know if the letter on educationally themed paper would be of any use. I would think that it would be better to get into the schools
first and make your face and name familiar with the staff (in a positive way).
I remember my sister spent awhile on the "sub list" before getting another full time teaching position after taking time off to raise her family. She went down to the district office to introduce herself to the "sub caller" in person (putting a name with a face) and brought her a little plant for her desk/office. She thought if the woman saw this plant everyday, she would remember her name when it came time to call for subs. It seemed to work, as she was fairly busy! Of course, this was 20 years ago; I don't know if it'll work today.
