I missed the first four weeks of school seven years ago due to a maternity leave. I found it helpful to meet with the sub and go over the plans and basic schedule and rules that I would be using when I returned (even though she used her own discipline plan and routines while I was out). I also came ahead of time and put up the bulletin boards and got the room ready for the start of school. I discussed this with the sub first and she was very agreeable to this. I think I even went to Open House to meet the students and parents but I made sure to okay this with the sub and I didn't stay the entire time. I know I didn't need the substitute's permission to do these things, but I felt that technically it was her class for those four weeks and I should respect her opinions also. All in all, it worked out great and it was a very smooth transition when I returned. Good luck to you
