    Index cards

I love to use index card holders for pre-writing and research. The children each get four to six pockets and glue them into a manilla folder. For a research project, they take notes (main idea and topic sentence) on each card. Each card should only have a few detail sentences to go along with the main idea. Then, they file it into a labeled pocket. For example, an animal research folder might have pockets labeled; animal's origin, characteristics of animal, what it eats, survival techniques, etc. Then, they collect their index cards one pocket at a time to write a 4-6 paragraph research report. You can use temporary labels on the pockets, so they can change with the next writing assignment. I've also used them for writing narratives, persuasive papers, etc. The pockets are labeled; Great beginning, paragraph #2, paragraph #3, Memorable Ending. You can set them up however you like. Good luck
