...I am SOOOOOO there with you guys!

I have taught for 21 years .. but 19 of them were in grades 5-7. Year before last, I switched to 1st grade (ACK! Long story there .. but, I digress...) When I taught upper elem, discipline was never a big problem. So I thought, "1st grade will be a piece of cake!"
Oh, silly me! Seriously - they ate me alive! For the life of me, I could not be firm with those cute little people. Actually, I never realized It was a problem, until the middle of last year. I overheard our Literacy consultants talking, and one of them said, "Wow, you can really tell the students who come from Lisa's class - they cannot control themselves!"
    Talk about embarrasing!
So it is my mission this year to get my disciplinary act together. All your advice on this thread really looks great.
Something I saw while I was observing another 1st grade class this last spring looked good - The teacher graphed the wasted time in her classroom (in minutes) each day and posted it on chart paper in the room. The class goal was to have a shorter bar than the previous day. I thought, "How cool - classroom management and Math - all in one!"
