    Weekly Vocabulary Word

I've done a "word of the Week" with my students and it has been very successful.

On the 1st day, I introduce the word. I use it when I wish for the student's attention. I say the word and they repeat it. They are challenged to go home and ask their parents what the word means.

The word is a word they won't ordinarily know (though I am frequently surprised) but has to do with a unit we are studying. For example, I used the word "mandible" last Oct.

The second day, I add a pantomime to go with the word (for mandible, I opened and closed my mouth twice). Students then repeat the word and the gesture that goes with it every time I need their attention. I also add the word to the word wall.

On the third day, we guess at the definition, then look it up to see if we were close. One Then, I have the students respond to my word with the definition for the remainder of the week. I also draw a simple illustration of the word next to their word wall word.

This really helps to add new and varied words to students vocabularies. They tend to use their new words in their journals and other writing.
