What if you headed the board "In other words..." then on individual strips wrote the over-used word in black and beside it on individual strips and in bright colors, wrote the synonyms for it. You could even leave sentence strips and colored markers out for the students to search for "better" words, and have them add their word cards to the display. This way, it might make them take a more active interest in trying to use different words and consciously be looking for them.
