The main thing is taking the graphic organizers a step further. Graphic organizers on their own do not improve retention. Students have to learn how to use the information in the graphic organizers. The first year we used the LFS concepts, many teachers got caught up in the graphic organizers but never DID anything with them. The focus on vocabulary is probably LFS biggest strength. Vocabulary instruction is far more important to me than spelling, yet traditionally we spend far more instructional time teaching spelling.
