letter to the parents
By Tracey

Clip to ScrapBook
I don't get terribly personal with my letter to the parents. I tell them how long I've been teaching, (this is only my 2nd year), where I went to college, that I'm very excited about the upcoming school year and briefly
touch on the rules/expectations. It's difficult to know just what information to leave out, because you're going to be working closely with these students for the whole year and you're going to get close to them. You may or may not want to mention your children, since you'll probably mention them in class, but whether you want to mention that you're a single mom is a matter of personal
preference. For instance, I personally don't mention my boyfriend to my students at all unless I say something along the lines of, "my friend and I..." and continue on into whatever anecdote was appropriate to the situation. I figure they don't need to know all about my personal life like that.

Mostly what you want to do is introduce yourself and give them an idea of who they're entrusting with their child, not relating your entire life story. Give them the basics, and anything else they need/want to know will come out later.
