Classroom libraries
By MrsT

Clip to ScrapBook
Classroom libraries were a priority at my school last year. We researched best practices, visited each others classrooms, etc. Our suggestions include:
1. letting the students help categorize the books so that they know
where to go to look for books themselves

2. Using baskets to house the books so that book covers rather than spines are showing. This is more enticing to students.

3. Have a simple method for students to mark book places in the library. I used large cardboard cards that the students decorated. They placed these in the basket where the book came from and the card stuck up so they were

easy for find. Other people use paint sticks in a similar manner.

4. Remember to place books at a level appropriate for kids... not too high or too low.

5. A cozy reading area near the books invites students to browse and enjoy.

Other suggestions abound... let me know if you want more.
