alternatives to reading response letters

Try pair-share. Write a list of what you want them to discuss on the board (title, author, main character, conflict, events in plot, etc.). Use a timer. Partner 1 gets 60 sec. to tell about his/her book then partner 2 (the listener) has 30sec. to tell partner 1 what he/she heard. Next they switch roles. When pair share is finished, call on the students to tell about their partner's (NOT their own) book. This usually works with reluctant readers. Keep responses and teacher questioning short. The key is to model, model, and model some more to the whole class before the class does it independently. Be prepared to be a partner.
