I love Poetry Slams and I am so gald to hear that other people are using them. I did a poetry slam with my first graders this year. They wore all black and the audience was instructed that at a poetry slam you "snap" not
clap (snapping your fingers instead of applause).

I also created a powerpoint presentation that went along with each child's poem. I took a picture of the child acting out a part of the poem, and it was projected behing them as they read it. For example, one child read "Sister for Sale" by Shel Silverstein. We got his sister from her class and I took a picture of him trying to "sell"

her to some classmates.

The Poetry Slam went great and the parents and kids raved about it! They loved helping me think up pictures to go with the poems! I think this is a wonderful tool to get kids involved with poetry. Have fun with it!

PS- May I also suggest having a Mime Day in class. It was great! The kids wore all black, I taught them some basic mime stuff (the box, pulling the rope). At the end of the day I painted their faces. But the best part by far was...NO TALKING!
