Poetry Slam
By Mary Ann

Clip to ScrapBook
I am pretty sure I got the idea here on Pro Teacher last summer. I use it as described above, the kids read poetry, their own and poems of other authors. I try to recreate the coffee house atmosphere by closing the blinds and turning off all lights except for one floor lamp next to a bar stool in the front of the room where the reader sits. I also have the kids tell why they chose their poem. Last year one of my 5th graders read a poem about being separated from someone you love and said that he chose it for his mom because, "Sometimes she cries because she gets lonely." For reluctant readers I have found that letting them read with a partner is very helpful.
