I'M A THIRD GRADE TEACHER AT GREAT FALLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I'VE USED THE ESTIMATION JAR FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IT WORKS GREAT. THIS IS HOW I DO IT. I START OFF THE YEAR WITH A CLEAR PLASTIC "BUBBLEGUM" JAR. I PUT A CERTAIN NUMBER OF ITEMS IN IT 1ST AND PUT IN MY MATH CENTER. I ALSO HAVE A CONTAINER FOR NAMES, A PENCIL AND BLANK SHEETS OF PAPER (CUT INTO SMALL SQUARES)IN THE MATH CENTER. I EXPLAIN THE 1ST WEEK OF SCHOOL THAT EVERYONE HAS A CHANCE DURING THEIR FREE TIME TO GO OVER AND PUT THEIR NAME, DATE AND ESTIMATION ON A PIECE OF PAPER, FOLD AND PUT IN THE CONTAINER. ON FRIDAY, BEFORE EVERYONE LEAVES, WE ALL COME TO THE RED CARPET AREA, GO THROUGH THE ESTIMATIONS AND THE ONE THAT GETS THE CLOSEST GETS TO TAKE THE JAR HOME OVER THE WEEKEND AND FILL IT UP. THEY HAVE TO BRING ME THE TOTAL AMOUNT WRITTEN DOWN, WHICH I KEEP UNTIL FIRDAY IN A SAFE PLACE,AND WE DO THIS ALL YEAR. THE CHILDREN LOVE IT. SOMETIMES THE ITEMS GO BACK HOME IN A ZIPLOCK BAG WITH THE PERSON WHO BROUGHT IT. OTHER TIMES IT IS CANDY OR STICKERS, ETC. THAT THE CLASS CAN SHARE.
