I would suggest the book "What Are All The Other Kids Doing While You Teach Small Groups?". This is a comprehensive guide for the starting teacher. Then author gives many ideas for you to pick from. There are pictures
Hand drawn, not photographs) and reproducible pages for use in some of the centers (listening, alphabetizing, etc). The activities are appropriate for a variety of abilities. Some things will be above a first grader and some will be perfect. I have used her ideas as a springboard to create my own. I do not, however, use her method of center management. I use a style more like Fountas
and Pinnell with my first graders. I have also been incorporating a "Smart Center" approach after attending a workshop by April DeCeasar (sp?). If you have specific questions or want more info, drop me an e-mail.
