gifted kids By Doni

Giftedness isn't just a label for bright kids. Kids who fall into this category think differently than other kids. They are different. They often times will not be your most motivated students nor even have the highest| grades, but their ways of thinking and working problems out are just different. Gifted kids can have learning disabilities, they can have areas of weakness, just like typical kids. My daughter is in the gifted program and in special education for Asperger Syndrome. What I have found from the gifted students in my class is that they are easily bored, often pushed way too hard by their | | parents, and have difficulty fitting in with their peers. It's really important to provide enrichment for these kids. It is also important to give them a learning styles assessment (I feel this is important for all students) to see how they learn and where their interests lie. I have an enrichment center in my class. Anyone is free to pick enrichment activities and projects. Most often, though, it's the gifted kids who do.Just a little advice from someone who has been there. I was one of those "gifted" kids in school. The other kids ragged me pretty bad (and my daughter faces the same). It is especially hard when you have a teacher who acts toward you like the typical kids. Don't do that. Don't make up your mind about this kid before the school year starts. Prophecy has a way of fulfilling itself. Set your standards high and give her a chance to perform. I am sure you will see evidence of what makes this kid different.
