I would suggest that u find out what has been taought in the past concerning SS, and check your state standards for required themes. We teach thematically so we might do a specific area of SS for a long period of time. I teach 5th and some of the themes we teach are Mayans Civilization, Explorers, and Colonial America. It takes a lot of time and resources (internet as well as primary source books) to teach this way, but it is very meaningful when students are given a project or two to complete.
