First Year

Clip to ScrapBook
Well Jenny to be honest the first part of the year was tough. There was so much to do and to remember. I felt my mind was just swirling but by Feb/March I started to feel more confident in my abilities. I must say my relationship
with my mentor teacher help termendously. She was always willing to listen and answer questions. I did a lot of listening which helped me to pick up tips and also not to seem to overbearing. My perspective was that I was new and had a lot to learn in comparison to more experience teachers.

Classroom Management

As I previously mentioned, I use math and reading centers to

teach. This allows me to meet the needs of each of my students. During my small group instruction, the other students are participating in eight math activities. Each center only had two students. In the beginning, I timed the students in order to teach them about how long they need to stay there; however, around December/January they no longer needed a timed reminder. In the very beginning of the year I went over and over the behavior expectations and what the center entailed.

Some math centers
puzzles
overhead problems (students love to use the overhead and be the teacher)
computer
file folder games
hopscotch game (they throw a ball twice and add the numbers together)
dominos they add both sides
sorting

Reading Centers
independent reading
poems
computers
making words
pocket chart stories
flannel boards (oral language)
writing center
listening center
reading around the room

I have several great books that I use for math center ideas which I would be happy to share with you. This is the only one I could find on Amazon.com but once I get back from vacation I can email it for you.

Instant Math Centers: Hands-On, Independent Math Activities
by Karen Bauer, Janet Bruno, Rosa Drew, Caroline Ellis, Mary Kurth, Sue Lewis, Cathy Young, Ruth B. Simon, Kathleen Dunne

If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to write me again.
