If your coat closet and storage cabinets have doors and you are allowed, you can cover it with sheets of bulletin board paper and tape work to it, adds color and gives you an additional flat surface. Do you have anything magnetic? I use the side of my file cabinet with magnets. Also, I have a couple of high wires strung across the room I display art from with clothespins. That has been very useful. ( May set off alarm systems if they are very sensitive to any movement.)
