What others are doing?
By MJH

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi, it's me again.

I've been using guided reading for about 5 years and it's always the same questions. I had these questions also when I started. To keep myself sane I usually try to keep my groups the same for no more
than two weeks, but when I started I kept the same groups for six weeks. After each report card period I would review and change the groups. As I've gotten more experienced in determining the groups I feel more comfortable with change every week or when needed. You might want to pick a set number of weeks to keep the kids in the same group if it's your first year doing grouping but try
towards the end of the year to make them more flexable.

What do the other kids do while your working is simple, have them complete center activities. I have literacy centers set up during my guided reading time and my students are trained how to work independently in those centers. I have a reading, word building, writing, journaling, art, computer and listening center. I call this time work centers because I assign students to work in each center. They can not decide on their own. They have a free choice center time later in the day. I also make sure that each student writes in their journal everyday, this is really great to track their progess.

This can be done because I teack kindergarten and by October my 5 year olds are working quietly and independently in centers while I meet with a small group. Yes, I do usually have a student that can not handle working independently so that child is in all my groups. I teach in a very large urban school where 95% of the students are below the poverty level and the school recieves Title I funds.

Don't get discouraged, it took me three years to feel like I knew what I was doing. Spend a lot of time on explaining and practicing procedures for centers, about six weeks. If the students know what is expected of them and you ease them into it they will be able to work in centers.
