preparing for first grade

One thing I learned is not to go overboard buying resources until you have a chance to get to know your students. If there is more than one grade 1 class in your school - find out what programs they use in L.A. and Math.

I
think a key would be to concentrate on what you will be teaching (theme and subject) from September to Christmas and concentrate on buying resources for those areas. At Christmas you can then look for new resources to end the year with.

Some things you might want to focus on for the first month.....

- calendar wall
- weather chart(s)
- word wall
- reading corner
- centers
-

math manipulatives

Generally September is spent getting to know your students and finding out what they know. I spend most of September to November reviewing all the letter sounds and introducing sight words, sentence patterns, etc., I like to do a daily center time through the first few months - 1) it helps with the transition from kindergarten to grade one and 2) it gives me time to do one on one testing with my students.

- I test them on their letter names and sounds
- Number recognition to 20
- Colour Words and Number Words recognition

Then during activities I also make observations on
- can they make patterns
- do they understand rhyming words
- do they have some reading knowledge or none at all
- are they writing yet

Then I can adjust my plans accordingly and teach my class what they need to learn. Some schools and classes have students who are very ready for grade 1 which is so nice to have. Where I teach however I expect about 1/2 my class if not more still not knowing all the letter names and knowing only a few letter sounds so I have to concentrate more on phonics at the beginning of the year just to get over that hurdle.

In math - many teachers start with patterns and numbers to 20 and then move onto simple addition and substraction and so on.

If you can find another grade 1 teacher in your area try to get a copy of their year plans as that can also help you with your planning.

Have fun Grade one can be a lot of work and even mystifying at times, but it is a great grade to teach
