Here's how it goes at my school. The librarians get the last week to do "inventory". (the week prior she quits exchanging books and has 5th graders help with straightening.)
Here's the difference though, they hire a sub to cover her classes for that week in OUR room. If no coverage we do get the choice of 'comp time' or extra pay.

I don't quite like the answer that you got from your union rep. Look further into the contract yourself, or to another union officer. If you don't, you should have something like we do in your the contract.

sounds like you're an elementary teacher. So am I, and what I have found is that elementary teachers are often taken advantage of. This is because we are generally not vocal or are just too "nice" and accomodating, like we teach our children to be.
Get involved, make sure you know what your entitled to.

Now if you want to hear something unfair...our librarian, during the week has close to 900 minutes of prep time as opposed to my mandatory 300, and she needs EXTRA time to close down her room. (Like I don't!)She walks out of school every day at quit time empty handed while the rest of us are there anywhere from 30 minute to 2 hours more! We are working towards making this more equitable.

Also, yes I feel sorry for the people that are teaching in adverse conditions but, I've worked long and hard for the work conditions that we now have. More than likely they don't work for a school that is protected by union benefits.
