Discipline
By Zack

Clip to ScrapBook
Why can't part of the academic grade be based on conduct? If you have discipline problems, all the students in that class will learn less. Call it "classroom participation" if you wish. You don't have that many options
to discipline a student. I think you must teach your content area(s) and proper conduct in every classroom. Start the year out right. Keep students active and engaged at all times. Teach proper conduct in a way that all students see it is better that they behave than not behaving. Parental contact often backfires in tough areas where many parents are frequently involved in the criminal
justice system.
Some parents feel their child can do no wrong, or believe in fighting for their child no matter if their child has done wrong.

If your academic grades are based on the level of mastery of your states curriculum, then all students would have lower scores if you had significant discipline problems. So, you are limiting the amount all your students learn, even if it is not reflected in your grading system.
