Okay, I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but once again I heartily recommend "On Solid Ground, Teaching Reading Strategies K-3" by Sharon Taberski. She discusses being stuck with a basal reader and ways she integrates science and social studies into the Readers' Workshop.I was in the same boat you were in this year (first year teacher in first grade), and I definitely feel your pain! More science and social studies for my babies next year.
