go with the flow - don't rock the boat

I agree with what you are saying about the student and that he should be held back (and rightly so). But as a first year teacher, you need to follow your principal's lead and pass him onto the next grade. I can elaborate if you or another teacher wants to know why, but to keep this post brief, holding a student back has alot of lasting potentially explosive issues attached to it between you and the parent or you and your principal (since he seems to be against retainment) and I don't think you should do something that could bring considerable stress this early in your teaching career. A kid with that kind of behavior just isn't worth it.
