Rejects?
By LM

Clip to ScrapBook
It's obvious you are not aware of Federal regulations for special ed. Resource in NOT for kids who are pulled out of general ed because of behavior. They have to qualify for a learning disability or six other designations
(tested and qualified by a diagnostician and/or medical doctor). I have taught in a resource room for several years and rarely see the kinds of behavior you mention. As for not seeing that in a regular classroom? I'm sorry, but you must not have been in a typical 5th or 6th grade class lately. I'm an in a 6th grade hallway and my kids are doing much better, behavior-wise, than the
majority of those kids. At least, none of my kids are adjudicated as many of the general ed kids are - sixth graders!! Plus, the written work I see in the halls is definitely no better than anything my kids have written. Rejects? NO! These are kids who need extra help learning, need to be taught a different way, and who, by law, are eligible to receive that help in often over-crowded rooms.

One more comment: There is not a single "rough" kid in my resource room, nor in any of the other resource classes among my colleagues at other schools. The "better bred" are in accelerated classes?? That is a big joke. Some of my parents are professional people whose child has a learning disability. At least two of our gifted students are serious behavior problems, or maybe I should say WERE. They are no longer in the gifted program. I know of at least one gifted student from our school whose parents are on welfare. So there goes your theory. You can never say "none" or "all" when referring to kids.

The point I'm trying to make is that you can NEVER generalize when it comes to kids - not any kid. Statistics will not support your observations about the difference in behavior of sped classes and general ed classes. Nor will it support your observation that we put up with "crap" in resource rooms. I think you made a wise choice not to sub in sped classes. I'm sure you are much happier and I know the sped teacher appreciates it.
