departmentalization

I teach at a very small school and we are going to departmentatlize 5th and 6th. We are having some of the same issues. We only have 4 teachers for both grades, so we are trying to somehow get all the subjects taught using limited teachers. We are thinking of teaching English/Spelling in homeroom. Has anyone tried that?
