Ours asked for requests of items we'd like to have in our library (books, series, videos, etc...). She also gave us all the kids' cards, laminated, and asked us to put their reading levels on the back - so she could help them pick AR books. A monthly newsletter is also helpful - with a place at the bottom to put in more requests.
