In addition to what's been mentioned, curriculum mapping is helpful in showing what to abandon in your teaching. For example, you have a great unit on dinosaurs but it doesn't fit with your standards. There is precious little time to accomplish all we'd want for our students, curriculum mapping helps clear out things that get in the way. Best of luck. ;-D
