spelling tests?

Hi - You know I was just wondering if there are first grade teachers out there who do not give spelling tests. We work on words that are relevant to our themes. They learn to spell these words and use them in the contexts of stories and art. What benefit to you see using a spelling test and how are they on retaining and using these words later?
