I am a first-year teacher (actually this is my internship period) and I also am surprised at how passive my third-graders are. It's really frustrating. Not only do they not think, they don't seem to understand why it might be important to be independent learners and thinkers. It's like they have been fed worksheets through their entire educational experience and have never had to develop anything on their own. There are exceptions, of course. Any suggestions? Activities?
