Yes, I think a counseling position would be much more manageable in terms of working with kids one-on-one. Observing our school's psych, she is really, really busy. But she does work with students individually. That appeals to me. I'm sure there are downsides to this type of position, not too mention the paperwork involved. However, it doesn't entail having to service 20 or more kids at the same time.

I'd look into it if I were you.
