    I usually present it as a choice to the student... something like "Let's try sitting alone for a day. If you find that it's easier to work, you may stay there." I have 2 boys this year who prefer to sit alone once they are on their own. It's not a punishment, it's a modification to help them learn better. They join the group when doing group work but otherwise sit by themselves. They're happier and so are the others.
